Most western people know the meaning of ‘ogre’ of which ‘ogoh’ is a derivative. Each year, the ceremonial season of “Nyepi” takes place, a time when effigies, representing sin and evil spirits are burnt. To many western people Nyepi is the most spectacular event on the Balinese calendar.
The unbelievable talent of using strips of bamboo, covered with paper mache, is common amongst most Balinese youth because it represents expression in denouncing evil. They make up all forms of gruesome monsters, some from 1 metre to a towering 4 or 5 metres.
As a window display, their gruesome features are a magnet to passers by. They can be ‘made to order’ in sections for easy assembly. Size is the limiting factor to determine whether a LCL or FCL container is necessary. Component parts reduce the costs of transport considerably.

The Magdalena Van der Westhuizen Foundation encourages the expression of art in most forms and has grouped together young craftsmen, with the expressed objective of creating full time employment. Proceeds from the manufacture of ‘Ogohs’ go towards the development of these young Balinese people.
